Suited and booted Johnny Robinson brought camp rock to the X Factor stage tonight, performing his version of ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’ by The Darkness.
We could hardly recognise him looking so formal in his suit, but in some way we were a bit disappointed to see him playing it straight. We have become so used to the flamboyant costumes that have become his trade mark on Saturday nights.
Still it was a refreshing change, and as for his performance, well we are not quite sure what to make of it. On one hand the song was ideally suited to his voice and he did as much as he could do, but on the other hand it was a poor impersonation of the Darkness because there was little in the way of originality.
JUDGES COMMENTS:
Louis Walsh: Gary has to like you because everybody here likes you and the public likes you. Gary does not want to like you but he has to. You hit every single note and you’re not a rock singer – you didn’t like the song – but you absolutely took that stage and we had fun.
Tulisa Contostavlos: You took the bulls by the horns this week and did a proper rock song. You haven’t sang rock before, but you sang it like a rock star. You absolutely smashed it, rock star of the night for me!
Kelly Roland: I must admit you really do rock, but I must say, you are such my guilty pleasure. I don’t know if I can see you selling records but I know for damn sure love to watch you and have a good time. |

Gary Barlow:: Johnny I really enjoyed that! Johnny only you could sing that song tonight…amazing!
