26-year-old Joseph Whelan from Wolverhampton impressed the judges at his X Factor audition with his rendition of ‘Whole Lotta Love’ by Led Zeppelin.
Before singing, the tool salesman revealed that he was desperate to succeed, for the sake of his young four year old son. He told Dermot O’Leary:
“When I look at him he just lights up my life. Being a father is the best thing ever, the first time I laid eyes on him for some reason something inside of me just changed, my whole perspective on life changed completely.”
“Me and his mum broke up not long back so Kian doesn’t live with me unfortunately, I do really miss that, I miss living with him. Ever since he was born I’ve been round him every day and sometimes ya know to come back from work to an empty flat, there’s just me there and I’ve got his pictures around and that sort of thing… it’s heart breaking.”
He later told the judges:
“Well the reason that I’m here today is because I really want to try and give my son the best life possible, I’d feel complete in life if i could do that. There is so much riding on this for me…not just or myself, not just because I want to be a musician, I really want to make my son proud, I really want to make him happy.”
Joseph then launched into a great rock themed performance that wowed the panel. Tulisa raved:
“Joseph oh my god. What a voice! What a tone you have. I think Gary’s gonna start getting jealous because you’re gonna be stealing all of the female attention.”
Louis Walsh said:
“Joseph that was a brilliant audition, you’ve got an amazing talent, you’ve got an authentic rock voice.”
Gary Barlow added:
“Just absolutely awesome, what a great voice, I really enjoyed that!”
Mel B was guest judging on the day and said:
“You smashed it! You’re really hot, you’ve got great tattoos, and you smash things up with tools, and then you sing…done!”
