It has been reported that this year the winner of The X Factor won’t be competing for the Christmas number one as in previous years. Instead the winner’s single will be chart a week earlier.
The change has come about as a result of Christmas falling on a Sunday. The record company has therefore opted for an early release, which would allow the single to chart the week before on December 18.
While there’s still the opportunity for the track to still be number one the following week, the song will be released following a final at Wembley Arena on December 11 with the aim of topping the charts ahead of the festive number one.
“This is the first time for six years that Christmas Day will fall on Sunday – the traditional Official Chart unveiling day – and only the third time in 20 years,” the Official Charts Company commented.
“However, the big Christmas Number 1 twist is that this year’s X Factor winner’s single is set for release immediately after the final, which is scheduled for Sunday December 11.
“This means the X Factor winner will chart for the first time in the week before Christmas, raising the possibility of a battle the following week.”
