American Idol 2014 changes with new judge Harry Connick Jr. and returning judges Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban

American Idol returns to our screens this week with new judge Harry Connick Jr and returning judges Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban.

Ryan Seacrest returns to host the show but Idol said goodbye to Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj from the judging panel.

Last season Randy Jackson departed from the judging panel after 12 years in the hot seat, but he will be involved as a special advisor to contestants and when the hopefuls make their way past the initial audition rounds, he will put them through their paces in a special Boot Camp, where they are whittled down for the live shows.

The competition returns for its 13th season tomorrow and as well as a new judging panel lineup, bosses have confirmed that while they’ve avoided ‘radical’ changes, they have freshened up the format with some small surprises.

American Idol kicks off in the US on Wednesday, January 15 and Thursday, January 16.
