Lucy Kay, a 24 year old student from Glasgow performs Vissi d’art for the Britain’s Got Talent judges but before singing admits that she’s had a difficult time getting to this point in her life.
Lucy admits: “I am originally from Nottingham but now live in Glasgow. I went there to study music and I wanted to get away from bad people…..bullies.”
Her mum was waiting backstage and cried as she described her daughter’s teenage years and difficult childhood.
She explains: “Lucy has had a very tough life growing up. My first husband and I broke up when she was young and it knocked her confidence a lot, She struggled to fit in, there was a lot of bullying. Everything suffered, school life, home life…”
“So many nights where I would just rock her to sleep. It was so sad. It got to a point where things got so bad she questioned her own right to live.”
“I thought if I don;t do something now, I know I am going to lose her. I asked her what she wanted to do and within a split second she said ‘I want to sing.’”
“She struggles with confidence, she is not good at having people looking at her but when she sings she gets transported. She needs to believe in herself. She is stronger than she thinks.”
Kay admits that she considered suicide on more than one occasion before discovering her passion for singing.
“I knew I had issues. My mum didn’t know what to do with me,” she says.
“You wake up and think ‘I have to go to school and I have to go through this again. What is the point of carrying on?’”
After her performance David Walliams raves: “First of all, you are a very beautiful girl with an even more beautiful voice. You sang a piece of opera that I don’t know and most of the people in this room don’t know but we were all incredibly moved. That’s testament to how incredible your voice is.”
Alesha Dixon adds: “That was so moving, we were with you all the way. You should be so proud. You have a gift and I am not an expert in opera but that was great to listen to. Wonderful audition.”
Amanda Holden says: “I just couldn’t take my eyes off you and I would have listened to that all afternoon. Just beautiful. Well done.”
Simon Cowell told the singer: “I have heard a lot of stories like yours and today is the day where you forget about those people for the rest of your life. Some of the best singers do sing through pain and you have learned how to use that”
“I saw you change as you felt the audience’s acceptance. Today is the day you learn to smile properly because what you just did was brilliant. Really, really special.”
“I don’t want to hear those people mentioned ever again right? This is just about you now and your very special talent Lucy. That song was beautiful.”
Afterwards David Walliams said: “It is very rare that an act comes on stage and you instantly want to see it again. I am so glad you came to see us. Thank you.”
“He’s a very creative guy. That was brilliant.”
Lucy sailed through to the next round with 4 yesses.
