Huckle-My-Buff Sussex beer cocktail recipe revived by Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty

Last summer Jamie and Jimmy set out on a quest to revive a lost British drink that has its roots in the county of Sussex.

Huckle-My-Buff is a hot drink that consists of eggs, brandy, beer, sugar and nutmegs and is said to be the world’s first cocktail.

It was original made with smuggled French brandy and Harveys porter beer from Sussex, and served in pubs all over the county.

However, it fell out of favour with the community when stage coach travel was no longer fashionable because people preferred to travel by train instead.

This beer cocktail recipe makes an ideal drink for a cold dark winter night that is bound make you feel warm all over.

Jamie and Jimmy enlisted the help of Miles Jenner from Harveys the brewers, to research the history of the drink and also to see if his brewery would consider making Huckle-My-Buff for the 21st century.

However, before that Jamie and Jimmy set themselves the challenge to get the people of Wisborough Green in Sussex to embrace this drink once more.

To kick things off, the pair used the kitchen and bar of the local pub to battle it out and see who could make the best Huckle-My-Buff beer, which they then asked locals to sample.

However, Jamie and Jimmy has global ambitions for their new drink and believe it could rival any of the world renowned cocktails currently on the market. Their first step to achieving this, was to get Huckle-My-Buff in a prestigious competition in London where if it went down well with the judges, it would be listed in the international cocktail bible, The Diffordsguide.

To make sure they knew how to mix the cocktail professionally, they consulted award winning cocktail expert Tony Conigliaro a mixologist who uses molecular mixology techniques in cocktails.

Although the duo did not win the cocktail competition with Huckle-My-Buff, their pitch was quite compelling and their rediscovered drink impressed the judges sufficiently to make it into the cocktail bible.
