John Torode Singapore chilli crab with pungent fiery chilli and black bean paste test the cooks in the last Quarter Finals of Masterchef 2014

John Torode spiced things up once more in the kitchen in the last quarter-final of the current series of MasterChef where he challenges the quarter finalist in the palate skills test.

The Australian chef cooked Singapore chilli crab, a dish with a pungent fiery chilli and black bean paste. The cooks must must identify all the ingredients in the dish if they are to shine in the task.

Sophie, Megan, Tim and Edd are this week’s quarter-finalist and without seeing how John prepared his dish, they are given just a few minutes to taste the food before being asked to write down exactly what is in it, using their palate and sense of smell. They are then asked to recreate the Singapore chilli crab dish without a recipe in just one hour and fifteen minutes, selecting from ingredients that may or may not belong in the dish.

For their second challenge, the four must go head-to-head to cook their own show-stopping dish for John and Gregg, as well as a surprise judge. This week the guest judge is the respected food critic renowned and sharp-tongued food critic Kate Spicer.

At the end of the challenges in the kitchen, the judges decided that the standard of cooking was not strong enough compared to the other quarter finals. They therefore decided to only put one person through to the next round; That cook was Sophie. She takes another step closer to the MasterChef champion 2014 crown as she heads to the semi-finals.
