John Torode Flat Bread three ways recipe kicks of the Invention Test on MasterChef 2014 UK

The new series of MasterChef returns to our screens tonight. The UK version of this international show is now in its tenth year and judges John Torode and Greg Wallace challenge the first six cooks to enter the MasterChef kitchen this series with an Invention Test.

They must choose between two sealed boxes of ingredients – one sweet and one savoury. The sweet ingredients include figs, mascarpone, pine nuts, puff pastry and stem ginger in syrup, while the savoury box contains lamb mince, spring onions, beef tomatoes, carrots and aubergines.

However, before the cooks are let loose with the ingredients, chef John Torode takes on the challenge himself, showing the viewers at home just what is possible with the few ingredients. He serves up a flat bread three ways dish using the savoury ingredients.

For the amateur cooks, they have just one hour to cook a dish good enough to keep them in the competition and the two that produce the least impressive dish, will go home.
