Junior Bake Off 2013: Mary Berry’s Welsh Cakes recipe puts Katie, Monty, Cameron and Elizabeth to the test

It is day six, and the second week of Junior Bake-off 2013. Today Katie, Monty, Cameron and Elizabeth are the four new young bakers who made their way to the bake-off tent.

Mary Berry and James Martin will keep a watchful eye on the young bakers and will set them two tasks to test their baking skills.

The technical challenge for the bakes today is one of Mary Berry’s recipes; 14 golden brown Welsh cakes.

The cakes are also known as bakestones within Wales because they are traditionally cooked on a bakestone.  A bakestone is a cast iron griddle that is placed on the fire or cooker; they are sometimes referred to as griddle scones.

This is the first time that Katie, 11, from Belfast, Cameron, 12, from Kent, Monty 12, from Cheshire, Elizabeth, 11, Bristol, will tackle one of Mary’s recipes. With size and thickness being crucial to the bake, this will be a real test for our young bakers today.

The showstopper challenge is one that tests the creativity of the four bakers. Today the young bakes had to bake a magical cake inspired by a fairy tale theme.

The four bakers were allowed to choose the flavour and texture of their cakes but the outside had to have an impressive design, intricate decoration and a perfect finish.

For her showstopper challenge, Elizabeth baked her Goldilocks and the three bears porridge cake with blue fondant icing. Monty baked a fiery chilli dragon cake with green butter icing, Cameron went with a princess and the pea cake with butter cream and fondant icing. Katie was also inspired with the princess and the pea theme, and baked a princess and the pea Madeira cake with butter icing.

The young bakers gave it all their best efforts but in the end there could be only one baker that would go onto compete again in the semi-finals and that young baker chosen by Mary and James was Monty.
