The Apprentice 2012: Household gadget biodegradable recycling bin proved a winner

the apprentice eco binIt was boys against girls once again in The Apprentice this week and the boys came away victorious for the second time thanks to their green credentials.

Lord Sugar set the candidates the task of coming up with ideas for a new household gadget that they must design and pitch to two big retailers.

The girls went with a bathroom theme and came up with two ideas: tap covers so you can rest your feet on the taps, and a splash screen to stop toddlers covering a bathroom with water.

The girls ran with the splash screen idea that eventually saw them lose the task and the sacking of Maria O’Connor by Lord Sugar.

However, the boys two ideas – a pair of rubber cloves with a dishwashing sponge and scrapper built on, and a biodegradable  recycling bin for food – resulted in a disunited team under the leadership of Azhar Siddique.

As a result two camps emerged from the boy’s team over the gadget. Those in favour of the gloves gadget idea and those who support the bin gadget idea. In the end Azhar made the final decision to go with the biodegradable recycling bin household gadget.

His decision proved a winner as more orders were placed by the two retailers for the bin gadget than the girl’s bathroom gadget.

The credit for winning the task however, should go to the inventor of the biodegradable recycling bin, Duane Byran. It was he who came up with the idea and intervened at a crucial stage during the pitch to one of the retailers to secure the deal.
