Junior Bake Off 2013: Mary Berry test the young bakers with her Melting Moments recipe

It is day four of Junior Bake-off 2013 and Charlie, Ellie, Ruby and Joseph are the four new young bakers who made their way to the bake-off tent.

Mary Berry and James Martin will keep a watchful eye on the young bakers and will set them two tasks to test their baking skills.

The technical challenge for the bakes today is one of Mary Berry’s recipes; ten melting moments dipped in chocolate with cream cheese filing.

Melting moments are made by combining self-raising flour, butter, sugar and cornflour flour and to give the biscuits flavour, orange zest is added to the mix.

This is the first time this week that Charlie, 10, from Northampton, Ellie, 10, from Manchester, Ruby, 11, from Devon and Joseph, 10, from Oldham, will tackle one of Mary’s recipes.

The showstopper challenge is one that tests the creativity of the four bakers. Today the young bakes had to bake a cake with a carnival theme.

For her showstopper challenge, Ellie baked a carnival pick and mix cake with vanilla cream, Joseph baked a Rio inspired carnival queen cake with buttercream and jam filling, Ruby baked a carnival of animals marble cake with coffee cream icing filling and Charlie baked a four tiered chocolate helter skelter cake with strawberries and cream filing.

The young bakers gave it all their best efforts but in the end there could be only be one baker that would go onto compete again in the semi-finals and the young baker chosen by Mary and James today was Ruby.
