The 54 year old former karate instructor finally ended up in the bottom two for the first time in the show. It gave the judges the opportunity they were waiting for after many weeks to show him the door. Even is own mentor Louis Walsh did not vote to save him.

Wagner was the 11th contestant to leave the show and the second on the night. Katie Waissel was also given the red card, but by the public because she polled the lowest number of votes.

Wagner and former supermarket worker Mary Byrne were the two that had to take part in the sing-off. Wagner choose to sing Nat King Cole’s ‘Unforgettable’ while Mary sang ‘This Is My Life’ by Shirley Bassey.

Louis Walsh – who mentored both the acts in the sing-off – was asked to vote first and opted to save Mary.

He said: “Mary, this is your life, so the act I am choosing to send home tonight is Wagner.”

Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole followed suit, leading to Wagner leaving the competition.

Although Simon did not cast a vote as the decision was a majority one, he said that it was for the best that Wagner left the competition following campaigns by critics of the programme to keep voting for the rubbish singer.

He said: “Why I am happy with the decision is because there were people out there trying to derail this show for different reasons and what has happened tonight is that we have put this show back in the hands of the public.”
