Junior Bake Off 2013: Abhimanyu, Emily, Alex and JoJo are tested by Mary Berry’s Rock Cakes recipe

It is day five of Junior Bake-off 2013 and Abhimanyu, Emily, Alex and JoJo are the four new young bakers who made their way to the bake-off tent.

Mary Berry and James Martin will keep a watchful eye on the young bakers and will set them two tasks to test their baking skills.

The technical challenge for the bakers today is one of Mary Berry’s recipes; 12 rock cakes drizzled with lemon icing.

Rock cakes first appeared in Britain during the Second World War. They are small hard fruit cake with a rough surface resembling a rock.

This is the first time this week that Abhimanyu, 11, from Warwickshire, Emily, 12, from South Lanarkshire, Alex, 10, from Lincolnshire and JoJo, 11, from London, will tackle one of Mary’s recipes.

The showstopper challenge is one that tests the creativity of the four bakers. Today the young bakes had to bake a jigsaw biscuit display.

The four bakers were allowed to choose the flavour of their biscuits but all the pieces must come together just like a jigsaw.

For her showstopper challenge, JoJo tilted her biscuit bakes ‘Learn To Count’ and she flavoured them with lemon, orange & raspberry and lavender. Alex made his ‘Chocolate and Almonds Heggig’ topped with chocolate buttons and chopped almonds. Emily’s ‘Biscuits in Bloom’ is a framed ginger biscuits picture piped with orange flavoured buttercream flowers. Abhimanyu’s ‘Gigsaw Castle’ was inspired by Warwick Castle and the young baker flavoured his creation with ginger and lemon.

The young bakers gave it all their best efforts but in the end there could be only one baker that would go onto compete again in the semi-finals and that young baker chosen by Mary and James was Emily.
