The boys from One Direction are celebrating tonight after scooping their first BRIT award.

The X Factor stars won Best British Single at the ceremony tonight in London for their debut track What Makes You Beautiful, less than two years after leaving The X Factor competition.

The boyband beat off competition from Adele, Ed Sheeran, Example, Jessie J, JLS, Military Wives/Gareth Malone, Olly Murs , Rizzle Kicks, Pixie Lott and The Wanted.

Speaking on stage, the group said the award was “for the fans”, with Harry Styles adding: “This is for you”.

Congratulating the group, X Factor boss and Syco chief Simon Cowell wrote on Twitter: “Fantastic news. Congrats @onedirection I am very proud of you. @TheXFactor @BRIT_Awards”
